Blend of 2005, 2006, and 2007 vintages, R18

"This red is medium-bodied but dense, offering old-school elegance, with cherry, tobacco, tea and baking spice flavors that show notes of underbrush and loamy earth. Balanced, with firm tannins and orange peel acidity. A blend of multiple vintages: 2005, 2006 and 2007. Drink now through 2026. 1,450 cases made. -TM " (WS)

"This wine was re-tasted prior to this report with similar descriptors to my previous tasting for a report I published earlier this year and the score was the same. A non-vintage blend of three different years and released in 2018, the NV Único Reserva Especial 2018 Release is composed of a blend of 58 barrels from the vintages 2005, 2006 and 2007, younger vintages than the Reserva Especial bottlings from yesteryear. It feels young and not that far away from the current vintage of Único, 2006, which is released at the same time as this. It's mostly Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon, where the aim is to keep a constant character across the different releases. It has a classical profile, with polished tannins and nice subtlety. Comparing it with the 2006 Único, it doesn't seem to have the same elegance, depth and complexity. 17,200 bottles and 216 magnums were filled in June 2014.

I tasted the 2018 releases from Vega Sicilia some time ago and published the notes before the wines hit the market—in the Interim End of January 2018 Issue-but I also wanted to include the notes here with the rest of the Ribera del Duero wines. I've tasted the wines again, but the tasting notes and scores are mostly the same as my previous findings/notes published in January 2018." (WA)

Winery Notes:
To lovers of fine wines, Vega Sicilia needs little introduction. This is by far the most prestigious wine estate in Spain, with an almost mythical reputation for quality and rarity. The property is located 100 miles north of Madrid in the shallow Duero (Douro) river valley on the high remote plateau of Castilla y Léon. The altitude is over 700 metres creating a special climate ; the cold nights and hot days during the crucial ripening period in September largely contribute to the uniqueness of Vega Sicilia.

In a good vintage only about 20.000 cases of wine are made and subsequently sold on a strict allocation basis. Demand in Spain alone well exceeds the total quantity available. The grape varieties famously include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, first brought to the estate from Bordeaux Grand Cru Classé vineyards in 1864.

The other unique particularity of Vega Sicilia is the long maturation in cask and bottle before release. The Valbuena is only released after 5 years…3 years in cask and 2 years in bottle. The Unico is always at least 10 years old, sometimes more, upon release. The wines are truly remarkable with enormous complexity, intensity and richness. The soft velvety texture, gorgeous mature flavours of black fruit, leather and oak are absolutely unique. Where in the world does one find a wine that is released in confidential quantities only when completely ready to drink ?
