Rare Red is a blend of 4-varietals from select Calif. wine growing districts: Syrah - 45.54% Carignane - 31.91% Zinfandel - 21.89% Cabernet Franc - 0.66%.

The attributes of the four varietals all contribute to the excellence of this full bodied blend. Syrah provides body and structure. Carignane adds bright fruit flavors. Zinfandel mitigates the more tannic Syrah and creates an aroma of blackberries. Barrel aged Cabernet Franc contributes color and oak. This everyday wine is both exceptional and unusual. It is a bigger wine than its predecessor JM-11/16/2011

Winery Notes:
In the 1950s and 60s, generic wines far outsold varietal wines. The generics were called Chablis, Burgundy, Rose, Sauternes and Rhine wine. They were blends, and some of them were very good. In those years there were only a dozen or two premium wineries with national distribution. Their best sellers, on and off sale, were Chablis and Burgundy. Varietals were sold at higher prices than the generics and that is still true today. In 2006 our government struck a trade bargain with Europe and abolished the use of European generic names unless grandfathered. It all but ended the era of California Chablis and Burgundy.

Today, instead of generics, wineries produce up-scale, blended wines, that can be categorized as “proprietary wines”. They are generally blends of specified varietals with a unique name created by the producer. These wines are born from surplus wine availability in the market and from the individual inventories of a producer. They are usually created to achieve lower pricing, below the pricing of straight varietals. They should be “bargains”! Americans have an insatiable desire for variety, novelty and variation. A blended wine which specifies its varietal content can be very appealing, complex, exciting, and very satisfying, with an affordable price! Our concept is to vary “Rare Red” in accordance with our opportunities in the wine market and with the other wines we produce. We therefore will change the blend from time to time, but we will always maintain the high quality of this blend, and offer you an outstanding value with “Rare Red”!
