Winery Notes:
The family Lheraud have been involved in winemaking and cognac production for hundreds of years, but it was only in 1970 that exportation and promotion really began in earnest. Now producing not only cognac, but Pineau des Charentes and Armagnac as well, Lheraud exports its wares worldwide-and continues to expand into more countries on a yearly basis. Today’s owners-Andrée and Guy Lheraud-concentrate on producing Cognac Lheraud strictly on a traditional basis, and continue to work tirelessly to introduce their products to more countries and communities throughout the world.

The Legend of Pineau des Charentes:
According to legend, during the harvest of 1589,a winemaker accidentally added grape must into a barrel that he believed was empty but in fact contained eau de vie. The mixture was duly returned to the cellars for fermentation. A few years later, the barrel was retrieved and was found to contain the drink that is now associated with the region of Charente. In 1921, a winemaker from Burie (Charente-Maritime), Emile Daud commercialized the drink.

Pineau des Charentes is one of the world’s rarest and most sophisticated drinks which is produced by combining and subsequent aging in oak barrels of cognac spirit (25 percent) and unfermented grape must (75 percent). It has a lovely straw-gold color with a stunning shade and a rich, pronounced tropical fruit flavor or pineapple, spice and a slightly nutty-honeyed finish. This wine is most often used as an aperitif, as well as cocktails. Some gourmets served it to the foie gras, fish and seafood.
