100% WASHINGTON STATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON!!

"Bright ruby-red. Cool, medicinal aromas of blue and black fruits, menthol and Tellicherry pepper come across as a bit brutal today. Extremely primary, even inky, on the palate; shows good density of texture in a midweight package but with strong pepper and herb qualities to its intense blue and black fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. I might have picked this very dry wine as the one made with port varieties (that's the Stanley Groovy red blend) as it finishes with pronounced, youthfully tough tannins that coat the front teeth and demand patience. I did not taste the 2017 Curiositas but the 2016 had sweeter tannins than this 2018." (VM)

"All from Red Mountain, the dense purple-hued 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Curiositas offers up a pure, powerful bouquet of cassis and blue fruits as well as plenty of classic Red Mountain savory herb and earthy mineral nuances. This carries to full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with a layered, elegant texture, ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. This is another stunning wine from this estate that marries power with elegance. It has some up-front charm today given its balance and purity, yet there's more than enough structure to warrant 2-4 years of bottle age, and it should keep for two decades or more.

An up-and-coming estate that readers need to try is The Walls, which was created by Mike Martin, with the wines made by Todd Alexander. They produce several wines from throughout the state, all of which merit serious attention." (JD)

Winery Notes:
Philosopher Thomas Hobbs once stated that “Curios-ity is the lust of the mind,” an idea that imagination and divergent thinking are a sought-after experience, something that required inspiration.

Here at the Walls, our inspiration is the goal of making curious wine and that is consistently achieved with each vintage of our Curiositas. “Curiosity is the soul of our wines,” says Mike. “It is what drives our willingness to engage in the depths of the complexity of wine and this wine celebrates that. We could make it easier on ourselves, but we must fulfill our curiosity.”

19+/20 POINTS, RAND SEALEY:
This is an exemplary Red Mountain 100% Cabernet. From the Shaw, Quintessence and Obelisco vineyards, it exhibits a semi opaque ruby color and an intoxicating nose of wild blackberries, black cherries, black plums, black roses, pipe tobacco, cedar, sandalwood, juniper berries, anise, eucalyptus and smoldering incense. The flavors are fleshy and accessible yet authoritative with dark fruits that are intermixed with black licorice, dark cacao, extra dark roast coffee and Red Mountain scorched earth. The concentration continues on the back with macerated berries, roasted walnuts, mocha, kirsch, integrated toasty oak (60% new French) and ground charcoal, all leading seamlessly into a firm yet sweetish fine grained tannin finish.
