"The red 2018 Altos de la Hoya was produced with Monastrell grapes from old ungrafted vines. It has a creamy and balsamic touch with sweet spices intermixed with ripe berry fruit and notes of pencil lead and licorice, with the fruit being black rather than red. The palate is juicy and round, with very fine tannins and some creamy oak in the finish. Pleasant and easy to drink and understand. 200,000 bottles produced.

Olivares showcases the large holdings of the Mediterranean where density of plantation and yield per hectare are low. They have 275 hectares of vineyards, 110 of them old ungrafted vines. They produce 800,000 bottles per year and are known for great value wines and also one of the best Mediterranean sweet reds from Spain that made them famous locally." (WA)

Winery Notes:
Located in the northeast part of Jumilla, Olivares’s Hoya de Santa Ana vineyard is signi cantly higher than the rest of the appellation. Sandy soils allow for perhaps the highest percentage of ungrafted vines in Europe. e high elevation leads to extended hang time in the Fall - critical for developing aromatics. Harvest typically begins the 3rd week of October, and nishes in early November! Organic viticulture is employed, and all Monastrell is trained with traditional, labor-intensive, bush pruning. Grapes are harvested by hand. No irrigation is employed.
