"Full medium ruby. Brooding, slightly inky scents of blackberry, bitter chocolate, licorice and violet. Offers a fine-grained texture but also a slight youthful bitterness to its dark berry, violet, black pepper and licorice flavors. Less giving than the Ramparts blend and a bit aggressive on the finish, showing firm tannins, a note of fruity peppercorn and a touch of alcoholic warmth. Comes across as less suave than the 2016 release: will this edgy wine come into better balance with bottle aging? (15.3% alcohol)" (VM)

"The 2017 Syrah Concrete Mama (100% Syrah) reveals a deep ruby/purple hue as well as rocking notes of blackcurrants, cured meats, black olives, and peppery herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated, yet seamless on the palate, with terrific tannins, it's a beautiful, singular Syrah from this estate that I suspect will evolve for 10-15 years." (JD)

Winery Notes:
Concrete tanks, one of the oldest vessels for wine fermentation, help us create wines with freshness and energy. The name of this wine, Concrete Mama, was partly inspired by Ethan Hoffman’s photo series in the late 70’s which focused on inmates at the Washington State Penitentiary, who named the concrete wall surrounding the prison ‘Concrete Mama’.“Concrete Mama” still sits sentinel above our little town; life is hard inside her walls, but for those who make it out, a new beginning beckons. This wine bears her nickname because nature’s struggle of transforming these Rocks District grapes into fine wine took place within similar walls of concrete - with loads of hard work and community.Concrete Mama leaves these Walls full of promise. All you need to do is give it a chance “on the outside” This wine offers up classic River Rock Vineyard markers, such as olive tapenade, a velvety texture and salinity. Planted in 2001, River Rock Vineyard has a lot to offer! Red currants, toasted oak and cocoa flavors mingle with a wonderful savory character.
