BRAND NEW AMAZING RELEASE!...HAD THIS AT A FRIENDS (THEY HAVE GREAT TASTE) DAUGHTERS WEDDING AT THE OJAI VALLEY INN, OUTSTANDING!!

96% Chardonnay, 2% Viognier, 1% Marsanne, 1% Roussanne

"A savory hint accents the concentrated white fruit and spice flavors. Tangerine notes show on the finish. Drink now. 5,500 cases made. -KM" (WS)

"A toasted oak aroma is brushed with caramel on the nose of this bottling, yet there is also an underlying alkaline kick of pithy lime and wet cement. It shows grip to the palate, where firm tension upholds oak, butter and lemon flavors that lead into a baking spice finish. -Matt Kettmann" (WE)

Winery Notes:
This is a classic cool-climate Chardonnay made in a traditional, balanced style. On the nose, find sharp aromas of citrus zest, green apples, and pears, with just a hint of vanilla and oak, followed by naturally fresh, crisp acidity balanced with a mouth-coating viscosity from aging on the lees. Completely dry, this is an elegantly balanced and structured Chardonnay.

VINEYARD WINEMAKING:
As with all of our Chardonnays, this wine was made using traditional techniques-whole cluster pressed, chilled overnight in tank, then transferred directly to barrel for fermentation and aging. We prefer to go to barrel “dirty”, meaning with a fair amount of the lees. For barrels we use primarily François Fréres Burgundy barrels, about 20% new. We also incorporate some other new barrels that are designated for Syrah, just for the fermentation. This technique adds a little more new oak to the Chardonnay and takes some of the edge off the barrel when it is used for Syrah.

100% whole-cluster direct to press before racking off the heavy lees for barrel fermentation, 20% of which was in new oak. After fermentation, the wine went through malo before ageing in barrel on the lees for 9 months. The 2017 edition of this wine comes from Bien Nacido Vineyard in the cool Santa Maria Valley of northern Santa Barbara County, and primarily from the Y Block, a 15-acre custom block planted exclusively for Qupé in 2005. Y Block is planted on gravel and sandy river bench type soils directly behind the winery. We have three clones planted there: California’s classic clone 4 and Dijon clones 76 and 96
