"The 2017 Gewürztraminer comes in with 12.1 grams of residual sugar, six of total acidity and 13.3% alcohol. Unusually, this also has 5% Riesling. About 40% of the Gewürz is sourced from the winery's 2012 vines on Seneca Lake, with the rest from other vineyards (like Hazlitt 1852 and Lamoreaux Landing). The Riesling is all from Keuka Lake estate vines. This is very well done, another fine bargain from Dr. Frank. This screams Gewürz in character. It's heavier on the lychees than on the spice, but those flavors linger a long while. It has good concentration for the level, although it could be more tightly wound. It is more persistent than it seems at first, though. It's also pretty delicious, if you like Gewürz, and impeccably balanced. The sugar doesn't stand out at all—it simply cuts the inherent bitterness of the grape. This is well done. It is likely to be better on the younger side, no matter how long it theoretically lasts.

All of the still whites are screwcapped. They are, by the way, fine bargains. They should all be capable of holding a reasonable time, but they drink great now.

Regarding 2017 vintage conditions, noting the number of 2017s here, the winery said: "2017 was quite the contrast to 2016. 2016 was very hot with very little rain (a drought year) while 2017 was more 'normal' with ample precipitation and cooler temperatures."" (WA)

"An off-dry style of Gewürztraminer with a nose redolent of rosewater, nutmeg, ginger and orange zest. On the palate, lots of honeydew and pineapple, balanced by white pepper and lively acidity. Solid-value Gewürztraminer. 12 grams per liter residual sugar." (VM)

"Shy aromas of pink grapefruit and rose gently perfume the nose. The palate is a shade off-dry, boasting well-rounded flavors of yellow apple, melon and grapefruit. A brisk white-pepper note marks the close of this easy-drinking Gewürztraminer. Alexander Peartree" (WE)

Winery Notes:
The 2017 vintage was a study on how much weather conditions can vary from year to year. The 2016 growing year was very hot and dry with very little precipitation. Winter before the 2017 growing season was cold but our vines survived without any damage. The growing season was cooler with ample precipitation all year long with plenty of sunshine. That made for a vintage with good production and plenty of time to develop complexity.

Gewürztraminer was planted in 2012 on one four-acre plot on our Seneca estate vineyard. Temperatures here are a few degrees warmer than Keuka thus providing riper fruit notes. Soils on Seneca are characterized by deep honeoye silt loam. Gewürztraminer blocks on our Keuka vineyard were planted in 1968 and 1981 on 3309 rootstocks. Soils here are shallow, shale-based which add minerality, acidity, and elegance.

Clean and delicate on the nose with white flowers, orange zest, and lychee, with a touch of white pepper and ginger. This off-dry wine is balanced with lively acidity and beautiful flavors of honeysuckle, orange blossom, cardamom, and lychee with a mouth-coating long finish.

Middle Eastern, Moroccan, Thai, and Asian cuisines. Pairs well with Spicy and Aromatic Ingredients like Pepper, Ginger, Curry, Sesame, and Soy. Spicy BBQ and Wings.
