"I reviewed the 2016 from Domaine Palon last year (and loved it), and while the 2017 Vacqueyras doesn’t quite match that vintage, it’s still a beautiful wine. Offering a rounded, sexy, fruit bomb-like style, with plenty of darker berry fruits, pepper, and garrigue, it fills the mouth with fruit, has no hard edges, and displays loads of charm. The blend is 75% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah, and I’d lean toward drinking bottles over the coming 3-5 years." (JD)

Winery Notes:
Domaine Palon is located at the foot of the “Dentelles de Montmirail” on the gentle mid-slope of Gigondas. This is a very small domaine with only 7 hectares in Gigondas and 5 hectares in Vacqueyras. The Palon family has been vignorons since the 1930’s but current owner, Sebastien Palon (4th generation) is the first to bottle the wines under their family name starting in 2003. Sebastien’s Grandfather, Jean Palon was the co-founder of the Gigondas Cave Co-operative and member of the governing board from 1956-1978. Jean-Pierre Palon, Sebastien’s father, was the president of the Cave Co-operative from 1978-2001. The wines here are pure class that highlight precision and focus. Sebastien achieves restrained power in his wines that showcase complex soil components as much as the juicy and ripe briary fruit and garrigue flavors. The wines exude balance.

75% Grenache, 16% Mourvèdre & 9% Syrah; Soil here is a mixture of calcaire and clay; the Grenache is vinified and aged in cuve while the Mourvèdre and Syrah are aged in foudré. Ripe raspberry nose with lots of garrigue and hints of smoke; lovely plump core of blackberry underbrush, licorice, tapenade and soil flavors through the finish.
