"Aged 10 months in 10% new French oak, the 2017 Pinot Noir Central Coast has a pale to medium ruby color and open, inviting aromas of wild blackberries, oolong tea leaves, dried cranberries and cherries with touches of underbrush, charcuterie, dried flowers and earth. The palate is light to medium-bodied with a firm, finely grained frame and earth-laced fruits, finishing with lovely freshness and spice. 20,000 cases were made.

Winemaker Mike Waller decided not to pick when the heat came over Labor Day in 2017. “I know if you pick underripe, you can’t make a good wine. So you just have to go with it when that heat happens. It was 105 degrees here at Mount Harlan for a couple of days, but we hadn’t started picking. Some vines along the Central Coast stalled or shut down. But our vines kept maturing the fruit. I didn’t see anything shift or raisin. It wasn’t that frying heat that the rest of California had.”" (WA)

"The 2017 Pinot Noir (Central Coast) is laced with sweet red berry, mint, spice and floral notes. Medium in body, perfumed and weightless in feel, the Central Coast Pinot is an excellent choice for near-term drinking. This is a notable level of quality for a wine whose production approaches 15,000 cases." (VM)

"Editors' Choice, This blend from sites across the Central Coast carries all the expert hallmarks of the brand, from ripe fruit to earthy spice. Tightly wound aromas of pomegranate, berry, soil and star anise lead into a crisp yet savory palate of raspberry and deep cherry. Pinches of dried sage and thyme linger on the finish. -Matt Kettmann" (WE)

Winery Notes:
Calera’s Central Coast wines are made from grapes grown by selected vineyards in California’s Central Coast Viticultural Area.

In the Vineyards :
The season began with one of the wettest winters in memory, followed by a warm spring that led to a well-timed budbreak. The warm, sunny weather continued throughout summer, providing ideal growing conditions. After a significant Labor Day heat spike led us to harvest a few of our earlier-ripening sites, a perfectly timed cooldown in late summer and early fall provided additional hangtime for the rest of the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness. While overall yields were down slightly in 2017, the quality is excellent.

Comments from the Winemaker:
Made from a handful of the finest vineyards on the Central Coast, this lush and vibrant Pinot Noir displays alluring layers of blackberry jam, red cassis and Bing cherry, underscored by hints of wild game and pennyroyal that add nuance and complexity to a long, focused finish.
