Winery Notes:
Luciano Almoedo remains the winemaker at this prestigious estate, producing pure Albarino bottlings with lovely aromatics and precision. The use of wood is definitively eschewed at the Bodega in order to preserve the natural lift and minerality of the grapes. As such, the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel with light lees stirring. The wine is blended by Eric Solomon, working in concert with the property, and is bottled in the spring after harvest.

It wasn’t until the last 20 years that progressive thinking winemakers of the region began to think that Rias-Baixas deserved it own D.O. Their change in thinking arose primarily from their belief that the Albarino varietal, grown on these specific soils in Northwestern Spain, produced an amazingly delicious wine that could not be duplicated in other parts of the country. The varietal is characterized by low yields, difficulty of cultivation, and delicate berries. Although other varietals are grown in the zone, a wine must be produced from 100% Albarino to receive the Rias-Baixas D.O.

A custom cuvée made for European Cellars by Martin Codax, the Burgans Albariño is named after the hill on which the cooperative is located. Burgans is a cuvée made from a small selection of vineyard plots in the Salnes sub-zone of Rias-Baixas which have a characteristic pit-fruit quality and richness in addition to the bracing minerality for which the sub-zone is famous.
