"Floral white pepper notes announce the juicy core of black tea, plum and tangy cherry flavors, with toasty shadings of spice and cedar that linger on the finish. Shows plenty of harmony and detail against velvety tannins. The density and power sneak up on the finish. Drink now through 2027. 899 cases made. -MW " (WS)

"The only one of the Mollydooker wines that even hints at needing some bottle age is the 2016 Velvet Glove Shiraz. Hints of hay or alfalfa mark the nose, along with huge raspberry and blueberry fruit. It's full-bodied, rich and tannic on the palate, picking up hints of chocolate and raisin on the long finish. I wouldn't suggest cellaring it too long, in case the dried-fruit notes come too much to the fore.

It's been several years since Wine Advocate last covered these wines, originally developed by the husband-and-wife team of Sarah and Sparky Marquis. They've since split up, with Sarah taking over the winery on her own in April 2017. Their son, Luke, was on hand for my visit. He's in charge of viticulture and watering programs, which has always been one of the key drivers in the Mollydooker style of lush, fruit-driven wines. Their vineyards are invariably the last picked, as they prolong hang time by irrigating much later into the ripening season than other growers. The results are wines that some deride as being over the top or manufactured, but simply put, press the pleasure buttons of many wine consumers. High alcohol, ample oak, velvety mouthfeel and super ripe fruit mark all of these wines. Style aside, the commitment to quality is here. In poor vintages, the top cuvées are simply not made, as in 2008, when there was no Carnival of Love or Velvet Glove bottled." (WA)

Winemaker Tasting Notes:
Our ultimate expression of Fruit Weight. The Velvet Glove is an Australian Shiraz with strength, depth and finesse. The 2016 has a perfumed nose of berries and mixed spice. The first sip gives way to juicy blackberry and cassis, followed clo sely by decadent dark chocolate and black pepper notes. With the depth of licorice, and a cherry like intensity; the fine lattice of tannins are seamless amongst the fruit, yet still provide that opulent mouthfeel that Velvet Glove is consistently notorious for. A wine of pure indulgence
