"Bold and expressive, with a medley of juicy berry flavors that mingle with notes of cream soda, orange zest and spice. Chewy tannins add some bite and density to the flavors. Drink now through 2027. 12,302 cases made.–MW " (WS)

"The 2016 Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz displays a heavy overlay of smoky, maple syrup and caramel oak but also rich chocolate, boysenberry and plum fruit. It's full-bodied and velvety in texture, with a coarse, slightly open-knit finish. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.

It's been several years since Wine Advocate last covered these wines, originally developed by the husband-and-wife team of Sarah and Sparky Marquis. They've since split up, with Sarah taking over the winery on her own in April 2017. Their son, Luke, was on hand for my visit. He's in charge of viticulture and watering programs, which has always been one of the key drivers in the Mollydooker style of lush, fruit-driven wines. Their vineyards are invariably the last picked, as they prolong hang time by irrigating much later into the ripening season than other growers. The results are wines that some deride as being over the top or manufactured, but simply put, press the pleasure buttons of many wine consumers. High alcohol, ample oak, velvety mouthfeel and super ripe fruit mark all of these wines. Style aside, the commitment to quality is here. In poor vintages, the top cuvées are simply not made, as in 2008, when there was no Carnival of Love or Velvet Glove bottled." (WA)

Winery Notes:
The delicious berry fruit and spice flavours of the cooler climate grapes from the Joppich Vineyard in Langhorne Creek gives the Blue Eyed Boy its crowd appeal. We blend it with McLaren Vale Shiraz to add intensity, vibrancy and richness. This year the McLaren Vale fruit came from the Gateway and Long Gully Road Vineyards.

Definitely a personal favourite, every year the Blue Eyed Boy is a stand out. This Shiraz is bursting with generous amounts of fresh plum and blueberry, accompanied by spice and licorice all sorts. Supple texture and a creamy finish features layers of biscuit cream and espresso coffee. A well weighted wine with a truly elegant finish. -Peter Tavella
