"Even better, the 2016 Faugères Vieilles Vignes checks in as 50% Mourvèdre and 25% each of Carignan and Syrah, brought up in 80% tanks and 20% French oak. Deeper colored, with a powerful bouquet of dark fruits, plums, crushed rocks, and licorice, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, loads of fruit, a stacked mid-palate, and a great finish. It’s not the most elegant wine out there, but it has loads of character and is a joy to drink. Enjoy bottles over the coming 7-8 years." (JD)

Mas des Capitelles is a small family-owned estate located in the village of Faugères, in the South-East of France. The vineyard extends over 24 hectares of vines consisting essentially of the southern grape varieties: Carignan, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault.

They have been cultivated in the schist hillsides of Languedoc for generations, in a unique terroir characterized by its southern exposure, dry climate, altitude (250m), slightly acid soils and influence from the North wind. Cultivated exclusively with organic and biodynamic methods, in the spirit of responsible agriculture and looking to the future. Consisting largely of old Carignan and Mourvèdre varieties, our vineyards allow us to product wines of outstanding quality that keep exceptionally well over time.

An assembly made of 80% from our over 80-years-old Carignan vines , and 20% Mourvèdre, the “Loris” vintage comes from grapes sorted on the vine and harvested manually for yields averaging not more than 20 ho / Ha.

Vinified traditionally with long vatting for more than 30 days, 20% aged in French oak barrels for 14 months, unfiltered and with a minimum use of SO2, the “Vieilles Vignes” vintage has an intense and thick color with a nose of red fruit (cherry, blackcurrant), dense palate with strong tannins as well as aromas of leather and humus and a peppery finish.

Organic wine and also originating from our biodynamically cultivated vineyard, this vintage can easily age well for a minimum of 10 years.

“What do I like about Mas de Capitelles wines? Purity, transparency, mineral crunch, lively acids, peppery nuances and properly-restrained fruit, all of which combine to make a harmonious beverage. My mouth waters when I smell them, my face smiles when I taste them and all the while my brain is working hard trying to get a grip on the array of flavors and textures. The wines work well with a glass but are better at the table. Respect for the land, and the vines, via organic and biodynamic practices adds to their allure and speaks to the mindset of those who tend the vineyards and transform the grapes into wine. They are superb values!” -Robert Jones MS.
