"Their entry-level Monastrell is already the 2016 La Tremenda is sourced from the vineyard that names the wine, from their estate El Chaconero in the village of Villena, a plot at 600 meters altitude planted some 25 years ago. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French barriques for six months. 2016 is a cooler year than 2014 or 2015, and the wines reflect it. It was not an easy year; they had to do a strict selection of grapes, and it paid off. It has the character of the variety, with its elegant rusticity with a fresh, herbal twist and a palate with fine-grained tannins, nicely textured and with a supple, very tasty finish. This is a superb introduction to Monastrell from Alicante at an incredible price. 50,000 bottles produced.

There is a new offspring from Enrique Mendoza, Pepe Mendoza's personal project called Casa Agrícola Pepe Mendoza (with wines produced exclusively with Mediterranean grape varieties) that starts in 2016/2017, of which I could preview some of the first, still unbottled wines. There will be some small production lots of very personal wines from organically grown grapes produced in the most natural way as possible, totaling 100,000 bottles. In the future Enrique Mendoza will be the project of Julián Mendoza and his brother Pepe will have his Casa Agrícola project.

There is a new Mediterranean red blend from their estate vineyards and many of the existing labels have disappeared, as they move away from French varieties, especially Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. When I tasted with him he was ecstatic about the quality of the just-finished 2017 vintage, which he said is the best they have done in 25 years. There will be some new wines in 2017, a white La Tremenda (25,000 bottles) produced a blend of Macabeo with 30% Moscatel and a white Santa Rosa. 5,000 bottles of a white Moscatel." (WA)

Winery Notes:
Wine Description:
The name "La Tremenda" references the name of the vineyard from which the grapes for this wine are grown and hand harvested. Made entirely from mature Monastrell vines, carefully raised in the harsh, arid landscape of Alicante. "The vine must suffer..." and here it does.

Tasting Notes:
Bright ruby-red in color, this wine shows expressive notes of fresh black cherries and red berries mingled with hints of sweet spice, toast and cocoa. On the palate, this accessible red shows silky texture, liveliness and long length.

Food Pairing:
Pair it with pork chops Normandy, Kobe beef, or parmesan-crusted asparagus tips.
