"The most approachable and ready to drink of the 2016s, the 2016 Gigondas les Souteyrades was in vat awaiting bottling when I visited. It's full-bodied, creamy in texture but rich and concentrated, with tons of black raspberry fruit and a long, velvety finish. It's another winner.

At Domaine Saint Damien, there are four Gigondas cuvées, although the Clovis Saurel isn't bottled every year. It's a small, family domaine with the magnificently mustachioed Joël Saurel at the helm, although son Romain is increasingly confident in the winery. This is a reference point for traditional Gigondas, but the family also owns a small portion of Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu. We finished up with a handful of older wines, which I noted for readers who may have cellared them." (WA)

"Lurid violet. Sexy, spice- and mineral-accented red fruit liqueur and potpourri aromas are complemented by a strong topnote of exotic spices. Juicy, palate-staining Chambord, cherry preserve, spicecake and lavender pastille flavors deepen with air while maintaining energy. This cuvee is always one of the most exuberant and exotic of the Gigondas releases and the 2016 doesn’t disappoint with its huge nose of blueberries, orange rind, crushed rocks and exotic flowers. Winery Notes:
From the lieu-dit "Souteyrades" on a small hill of pure gray clay soil with few stones, the 80% Grenache was planted in 1948 and the 20% Mourvèdre was planted in 1977. Vinification with maceration for 6 to 8 weeks in concrete vats. Regular and pumping. Aged in 50hL foudre for 12 months.
