"The 2016 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a broody, slightly reduced bouquet, although there is plenty of fruit coiled up inside. It just needs time. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins, slightly meaty in style, complex with a savoury finish. It does lack the purity and finesse of its peers, yet it remains a pleasurable Volnay to enjoy over the next 15 years. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy." (VM)

"The lateness of the malos is in evidence as here too the nose is quite firmly reduced. As is typically the case there is even more size, weight, power and even concentration to the broad-shouldered and robust flavors that possess an outstanding level of dry extract that coats the palate and does a fine job of buffering the very firm tannic spine on the driving finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is a take no prisoners Clos des Chênes." (BH)

Winery Notes:
Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes: The “Clos des Chenes”, again from one of the renowned 1er Cru sites in Volnay, is a touch fruitier and more subtle than the Taillepieds with slightly less stout tannins. It is a generous and quite exceptional wine that always reflects exceptional balance. The Bitouzet parcel is 0.54 hectare and the vines were planted in 1976, 1982 and 1986.
