"The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru les Rugiens has an intense, powerful bouquet with layers of ripe wild strawberry, raspberry and cranberry; there is great volume and drive here with floral scents (iris and rose petal) emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe red cherry fruit, a little rustic compared to the Pommard Epenots, broad-shouldered with firm and insistent grip. But I kind of like the "unruliness" of this Rugiens and it stands it in good stead for several years bottle age. This is a great Pommard from winemaker Frederic Barnier and his team." (WA)

"Bright, palish red. Deep, subtle perfume of red fruits, wild herbs, wild mint and dried flowers. Juicy, penetrating wine with lovely saline minerality contributing to its impression of finesse. The long finish features suave tannins. This very sexy, subtle Rugiens is evolving slowly. Jadot picks these vines in Rugiens-Bas later than their other plots in Pommard." (VM)

Winery Notes:
The commune of Pommard produces only red wines, and has no Grands Crus. Les Rugiens consists of two parcels, Les Rugiens Haut and Les Rugiens Bas, based on their respectively higher and lower positions at the summit of the Pommard slope. Rugiens comes from the French word rouge, referring to the reddish soil in the vineyard, a result of high iron content. In winemaking, the Pinot Noir grapes are fermented in tanks for up to 4 weeks, and then the wine is matured in oak barrels for 12 to 15 months before bottling.
