"100% Grenache from sandy soils, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone Les Sables d'Arene offers everything you could want from a Côtes du Rhône, and then some. Roasted herbs, black cherries, framboise and spring flowers all flow to a full-bodied, beautifully polished red that has no hard edges and a great finish. Readers should buy a case of this beauty for drinking over the coming 3-4 years.

Under the inspired leadership of Marie Giraud, with assistance from consultant Philippe Cambie, this estate has quickly risen into the tiny handful of top estates in Châteauneuf du Pape. The style here incorporates a mix of traditional and progressive techniques, and while the Grenache is always kept in concrete tanks, they utilized smaller barrels for their Syrah. While they produced two seriously good 2014 Châteauneuf du Papes, their 2015s are blockbusters that I’ll certainly be buying!" (WA)

Winery Notes:
Coming entirely from Grenache planted around 1950 in a sandy part of Lirac, the Côtes-du-Rhône Les Sables d’Arene would be a standout Lirac if it wasn’t for the fact that mono-varietal wines are not permitted according to current AOC rules. Rather than dilute the quality and unique expression of of old-vine Grenache grown on sandy soils, François and Marie bottle this wine as a Côtes-du-Rhône rouge instead.
