2017 WINE SPECTATOR TOP 100: #17

"This red shows grace and depth. Black cherry, plum, mineral and smoke flavors mingle harmoniously over well-integrated tannins, while lively acidity keeps this focused. Not showy, but all the pieces fit together. Balanced, in the modern style. Monastrell. Drink now through 2025. 10,000 cases made.–TM " (WS)

"The 2015 Tarima Hill is an old-vine Monastrell cuvée from a very healthy year fermented in open-top 5,000-liter vats and matured in first and second use barriques for 14 months. Part of the wine that does not make it to the blend for Triga is here. This clearly represents the house style-good ripeness, powerful, generously oaked and approachable-in a commercial profile, while keeping the varietal character. 72,000 bottles produced.

Volver, the joint venture started between Jorge Ordoñez and winemaker Rafa Cañizares, is now owned 100% by Rafa Cañizares. He has a winery in La Mancha, in the village of Casa de los Pinos in the province of Cuenca, and another one in Alicante, in Pinoso." (WA)

"(made from vines planted in 1935 and 1970; fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks and aged in new and used French and American oak barrels) Bright purple. Heady, exotic aromas of candied dark fruits, incense, vanilla and smoky minerals, backed by subtle floral notes. Sweet and broad on the palate, offering intense blueberry and cherry-vanilla flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Hangs on with strong tenacity on the finish, which features velvety tannins and an echo of sweet blue fruit." (VM)

From old vines and aged 14-16 months in French oak, the 2015 Tarima Hill sports an inky color as well as a smoking bouquet of black raspberries, blueberries, pepper, and dried flowers. It's broad, expansive, and sweetly fruited, with a great mid-palate and sweet tannin. It's a sexy fruit bomb done with class!" (JD)

"Minty aromas of herbal berry fruits set up a tight, linear palate with acidity that registers as tartaric and jacked up. Dark plum and spiced blackberry flavors are toasty and a touch hot on the finish." (WE)

Winery Notes:
The project is a joint venture of Jorge Ordonez and the Gil family located in Jumilla Spain. The grapes are 100% Monastrell with the age of the vines 25- 35 years old. The wine is 100% stainless steel fermented with some stirring of the lees to attain the maximum out of this variety. The soils are very chalky and are at an elevation of some 2,100 feet above sea level. The winery owns some (80 hectares) 192 acres of vineyards, some are under organic practices and are currently in the process of being certified organic.
