"Medium ruby colored, the 2014 Pinot Noir Estate offers a lovely, lifted perfume of potpourri, baking spices and anise over a core of mulberries and baked cherries. It fills the full-bodied palate with expressive berry preserves and spice layers, framed by chewy tannins and finishing with great expression and balance." (WA)

I WAS ASTONISHED HOW EXCELLENT WAS THIS $27.95 SONOMA PINOT NOIR! 2014 WESTERHOLD BENNETT VALLEY PINOT NOIR

I must admit that the exceptional quality of this fine Santa Rosa Sonoma Pinot Noir came as quite a pleasant surprise to me, when my wife and I tried it at dinner a few days ago. I simply was not expecting this much quality, classic Pinot Noir character and balance from a $27.95 domestic Pinot Noir.

This is a Pinot Noir on the rich mouth filling side with appealing flavors of cassis, plums, dark berries and that east to recognize but difficult to define classic Pinot Noir essence that I often refer to.

The wine is also described quite well in a recent issue of the Parker Wine Advocate, as a "Medium ruby colored, the 2014 Pinot Noir Estate offers a lovely, lifted perfume of potpourri, baking spices and anise over a core of mulberries and baked cherries. It fills the full-bodied palate with expressive berry preserves and spice layers, framed by chewy tannins and finishing with great expression and balance.” Where I differ from this description is the color which is a deep purple seldom found in Pinot noir (I know, “big deal” one says laughingly

Very enjoyable now with the potential to offer another five to maybe even 10 more years of drinking pleasure.

Winery Notes:
The hallmark of the 2014 vintage for Pinot Noir is the amazing, rich textures that the wines developed. Our 2014 Westerhold Pinot Noir is a perfect example of the style. It has an amazing, round mid-palate texture that leads to substantial, but refined tannins and a long, lingering finish. Aromatically, the wine is like eating a bowl full of mixed berries in the middle of a eucalyptus grove - blackberry, cherry and a beautiful hint of spearmint that comes from the site. The flavor profile is perfectly in step with the aromatics - cherry, berries, all of the traditional Pinot Noir flavors come alive in the mouth. This is a wine that you will want to open as soon as you get it, and then share your other bottles with friends. -Russell Bevan, Winemaker

THE BACK STORY AND WHY WE BOUGHT AFTER TASTING:
I want to introduce myself and our winery to you, and am hoping that I can send you some sample bottles to see if you’d have any interest in carrying our wines in your store. I used to shop in your store quite frequently when we lived in Marina del Rey – we moved up to Sonoma County in 2006 to start our winery. Briefly, we’re a small (around 400 cases/year) winery making Pinot Noir (we’ll be bottling our first Chardonnay vintage later this year) from estate fruit in Bennett Valley, Sonoma County. Our Pinot Noir vineyard is planted to Dijon clones 115, 667, 777 and also Pommard clone. Our Chardonnay vineyard blocks are from old Wente clone cuttings. We also made Syrah from the 2007 vintage through the 2014 vintage from Alban 1 clone Syrah (we grafted our Syrah vineyard over to Chardonnay in 2015). Russell Bevan, of Bevan Cellars, has been our winemaker since our founding in 2007.
