"The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was aged for 17 months in 45% new French oak, is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is dense purple, with sweet cedar wood, unsmoked cigar tobacco, crème de cassis, and black raspberries in a classic, almost St.-Julien/Pauillac style. This emerged from a valley floor vineyard on the west side of Napa, where Christian Moueix told me that 2014 was characterized by generally slightly higher than average temperatures for the summer with only minor heat spikes in June and July. August and September went off without a hitch, and the harvest took place during the month of September. This full-bodied wine will hit its peak in 3-5 years and last for 25-30.

This is the newest estate vineyard wine from Christian Moueix. Located just to the north of Dominus, production varies from a low of 950 cases in 2015 to just over 1,300 cases in 2014." (WA)

"In 2014, the Cabernet Sauvignon is dark, virile and imposing, with notable depth and intensity for the year. Grilled herbs, smoke, tar, graphite, tobacco and licorice meld together in a deep, effortless wine that remains quite embryonic. The darker tonalities of fruit recall the 2013, but the forward, dense fruit leans more towards the style of the 2012. The story of 2014 comes down to rain. Specifically, there was none, and the wine very much reflects that struggle with nature." (VM)

"The evolution of this wine has been phenomenal since I tasted it in barrel a year ago with the same black cherry, plum and citrus character but with a turn to orange leaf, dark Chinese tea, and mushroom. Full body, fine and velvety tannins with a touch of dust to the texture. So much chocolate and fruit undertones with forest floor and hints of tobacco, too. The mouthfeel and complexity are seductive. Better from 2022 but a joy to taste. Spring 2018 release." (JS)

Winery Notes:
Ulysses reflects the potential and individuality of the Ulysses Vineyard. Using a minimalist approach, Christian Moueix and his team employ careful observation and restrained intervention from vineyard to bottle to create an authentic, pure and radiant wine.

Ulysses is a distinctive estate-bottled Cabernet Sauvignon with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It should be decanted prior to serving.

Ulysses 2012, our first vintage, is a finely sculpted wine with powerful momentum and lift.

Ulysses is a result of Christian Moueix’s ongoing quest to explore the character of an exceptional terroir and to translate its precise quality in a wine. His journey began in Bordeaux and continues today in both France and Napa Valley.

Son of Bordeaux wine merchant Jean-Pierre Moueix, Christian was born in Libourne, France. Having studied viticulture at University of California, Davis, his career has been marked by the introduction of revolutionary vineyard techniques. Today, along with Dominus Estate and Ulysses Vineyard in Napa Valley, he and his son Edouard, produce wine from eight family chateaux in Pomerol and Saint Emilion.

Christian is driven by his zealous pursuit of perfection and his belief in stewardship. His 45-year career has earned him recognition as one of wine’s great visionaries. Christian interprets the classic tale of Ulysses’ voyage as an epic journey and a lesson in humility. To him, the story evokes commitment, passion and the passage of time, all elements essential to our understanding of a vineyard and its potential to produce great wines.
