"Not many producers opted to make a Gran Selezione in this difficult vintage. The Rocca di Castagnoli 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Stielle delivers above my expectations. Although the bouquet is initially shy or closed, it takes just a little more attention and patience before it starts to unfold, revealing bold and delicious fruit along the way. This is a pure expression of Sangiovese. Only 7,500 bottles were made.

The year 2017 marks a generational change in the management of Rocca di Castagnoli in Gaiole in Chianti. Alessandro Calì and Francesco Bolognan Calì are now head of operations." (WA)

"The 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Stielle is a positively stellar wine. Deep, powerful and explosive, but with tons of balance, the Stielle is simply magnificent in 2014. Black cherry, lavender, mint, tobacco and licorice add to a sense of gravitas in this super-concentrated, dense wine." (VM)

"The nose here is focused on blue fruit, such as blueberries and elderberries. Freshly cut herbs, too. Medium body, firm tannins and a fine finish. Excellent for the vintage. Drink in 2020." (JS)

Winery Notes:
Organic. 100% Sangiovese. The hill Stielle is one of the historic areas for Sangiovese production. Its privileged position is perfect to produce a great Cru. Sourced from 10-30 years old vines on rich in limestone and chalk soils. Aging: 18 months in tonneaux and big Chianti barrels, 12 months in bottle.
