"The 2014 Faithful Hound is a blend of 32% Cabernet Franc, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 16% Malbec and 7% Petit Verdot. It has a joyful and very pure bouquet with red cherry and red plum scents, the oak nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced with grainy tannin, good backbone with a satisfying tobacco-edged finish. This is worth investigating and it has the substance to age well in bottle.

Mulderbosch is a winery that has been detailed in my previous reports, one that has been re-energized by the appointment of former Klein Constantia winemaker, Adam Mason, who also showed his own Yardstick wines that are reviewed separately. Oenophiles should seek out their single-vineyard Chenin Blanc bottlings that remain very well priced. Often there is not one that stands above the rest, rather they are analogous to Burgundy in a sense of terroir shaping a varietal in its own unique way, the subtle differences in other words. These remain very well priced. Also, look out for the 2015 1000 Miles Sauvignon Blanc that infuses some lovely wild mushroom-like notes into the more orthodox gooseberry and fresh asparagus flavors." "(30% new oak): Bright ruby-red. Sexy spicy oak lifts aromas of currant, mulberry, menthol and chocolate. Plush, fine-grained and sweet, combining an almost chocolatey ripeness with perfectly integrated acidity and lovely dried herb lift. Savory, structured and subtly intense; balanced already but built for a slow and graceful evolution in bottle. A wonderfully pure and delineated blend with a sophisticated seamless texture, terrific complexity and lovely floral lift." (VM)
