"Another fabulous wine, although there’s not much of it, is the 2014 Zinfandel Gnarly Vine Monte Rosso Vineyard from this fabulous first-growth vineyard in Sonoma. This is a blend of 97% Zinfandel and 3% Petite Sirah aged in 66% new French oak, 16% new American oak and the rest used. Only 500 cases were made of this whopper, which is full-bodied, has great intensity with a stunning nose of black fruits, pepper, Mediterranean herbs and spice. Good natural acidity gives focus and vibrancy to this wine that comes from vines as old as 120 years. This is a full-bodied classic Zinfandel at its very best, from one of the great vineyards in California. Finished alcohol is 16.2%, so this is a heck of a mouthful.

It is hard to believe that the iconic Louis M. Martini Winery first made Napa Cabernet Sauvignon in 1933. Louis Martini is long gone, but he played a significant role in establishing Napa and Sonoma valleys as premium grape-growing regions. His family has carried on and more recently benefitted from the influx of significant investment from the new owners – the Gallos.

Lot 1 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Vertical Tasting 2003-2014: Included is a rare look at one of the top Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley usually sourced from multiple growers in different AVAs. Production varies from a low of about 400 cases to a high of 1,000. The wine is generally aged 22 or more months in all French oak with various percentages of new oak, but usually at least three-fourths of it new. Starting with the oldest vintage, I will proceed through the years until finishing with a barrel sample of 2014." (WA)

Winery Notes:
This Zinfandel is crafted entirely from old vines—some more than 125 years old—on our renowned Monte Rosso Vineyard.

It’s a big, deep wine with intense aromas and a fusion of dark fruit flavors, including blackberry reduction and black currant. Those blend with layers of spice notes ranging from fresh black peppercorns to clove. The wine is full-bodied, vibrant and robust, balanced by velvety tannins and distinctive minerality that is characteristic of Monte Rosso’s iron-rich volcanic soils. The extraordinarily long and luxurious finish adds rich hints of vanilla and molasses. Robert M. Parker Jr. gave this wine 95 points and called it “a full-bodied classic Zinfandel at its very best.
