66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Syrah, 6% Petit Verdot

"A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Syrah and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2014 Chester Kidder offers up a sweet bouquet of blackcurrants, blackberries, licorice and asphalt. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and seamless, with an ample core of succulent fruit, good balancing acids and a richly tannic, subtly oak-inflected finish. It should drink well for a decade." (WA)

"(15.3% alcohol): Bright red-ruby. Musky, slightly high-toned aromas of dark raspberry, black olive, licorice and smoked meat are lifted by a violet topnote. Wonderfully sweet, densely packed wine with terrific fruit intensity and substantial baby fat. This creamy, horizontal blend finishes plush and long, with serious, broad palate- and tooth-coating tannins, a distinct spiciness and no rough edges. A very harmonious 2014." (VM)

"Lots of dark and compelling fruit on the nose with licorice and walnut skin. Black pepper and tar. Full body and chewy tannins. Lots of wood and chocolate undertones. Almost sexy. Blend of 66% cabernet sauvignon, 28% syrah and 6% petit verdot. Drink in 2020." (JS)

"Looking at the 2014 Chester Kidder Red Wine, it's a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Syrah, and 6% Petit Verdot that spent 30 months in 85% new French oak. This inky purple-colored beauty offers a rocking bouquet of blackcurrants, scorched earth, and dark chocolate, full-bodied richness, a stacked mid-palate, and ripe, polished tannin. It's a big, rich, age-worthy red that styles impeccably balanced and lively, with notable purity. Count me in as a fan." (JD)

Winery Notes:
Allen Shoup named this wine in honor of his grandfather, Charles Chester, and his grandmother, Maggie Kidder. He selected Long Shadows' director of winemaking and viticulture, Gilles Nicault, to craft this New World blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and other classic Bordeaux varieties.

The 2014 vintage enjoyed a picture-perfect growing season that produced rich, flavorful wines. Spring arrived early, warm and dry, setting the stage for another hot summer. Temperatures were consistently warm, hastening an early start to harvest, but the Columbia Valley’s balmy fall days and cool autumn nights slowed ripening just enough to allow the grapes to reach full physiological maturity while preserving the fruits’ natural acidity.

Select Cabernet Sauvignon lots underwent an extended maceration of 40 days to produced supple tannins that stand up to 30 months of barrel aging in tight-grained French oak barrels (85% new). The extra time in barrel helped to integrate the fruit, enhance the mid-palate with an extra layer of complexity, and provide an appealing earthiness to the finish.

Brimming with expressive aromas and flavors of ripe black cherries, violets, oak spice and a hint of graphite, the 2014 Chester-Kidder offers layers of depth and complexity. Its rich texture and firm yet refined tannins linger across a lengthy finish that showcases the vibrant character of this limited production wine.
