"If very clearly coming from the same sturdy family, each of the Flora Springs bottlings are of a distinctive piece, and, in this case, the tannins that are readily evident in them all gets slightly ahead of fruit. Though not without a strong sense of currants, the wine has to work harder to stay on course as its astringency builds and builds at the finish, and, while it succeeds, it does not do so effortlessly. It is a solid and cellar-worthy wine, to be sure, and it needs plenty of age but, even then, it is likely to remain the most sinewy of the bunch. Reviewed: April 2017" (CG)

"Rich as chocolate cake, this bold wine is adorned with fresh berry flavors, its body full and concentrated. Soft like velvet curtains, it's a ripe expression of the vineyard in a ripe, picture-perfect year." (WE)

Winery Notes:
Planted on an oak-laden hillside between the AVAs of Oak Knoll and Coombsville, our Out of Sight Vineyard off the Silverado Trail is easily missed, hence its name. When we purchased the property in the late 1980s, the site’s gravelly loam soils and northwest exposure signaled its great potential, but the tangled head-pruned vines also suggested years of neglect. We spent the next several years re-developing the property and retraining the vines, and today, our organically farmed Out of Sight vineyard is one of our most treasured fruit sources. The 2014 vintage offers a mouthful of dark red and purple fruit – juicy plum, blackberry and black cherry – joined by snappy notes of spearmint, fennel and licorice. The wine has overtones of smoky oak, cedar, and fire-roasted herbs which add layered complexity to the overall impression of plush and generous fruit. This is a full-bodied Napa Valley Cabernet, with a dense core of fruit and a muscular mouthfeel that resolves into a smooth and long lasting finish.

2014 was celebrated by Napa Valley vintners as another vintage for the record books. Heavy winter rains nourished the vines as they emerged from dormancy, and a warm, relatively frost-free spring allowed bud break, flowering and fruit set to proceed without interruption. Continued warm, dry weather throughout the summer brought the grapes to perfect ripeness in a harvest that was relatively early and also bountiful.
