"Hats off to the 2014 Sicilia Perricone Vigna del Core. The Perricone grape is also called "Guarnaccia" in Sicilian dialect and the variety is gaining a steady, under-the-radar following. It is a difficult variety to farm and Feudo Montoni offers one of the best expressions on the market today. The wine opens to immediate intensity with dark fruit, barbecue smoke, cured meat, balsam herb and exotic spice. All that intensity comes from the unique clone used here because the winemaking (with cement and botte grande aging) is relatively straightforward and non-invasive. The wine ends with true grit and determination.

I am always impressed by the wines of Fabio Sireci, but this new set of releases blew me away. These are some of the finest wines ever made at the beautiful Feudo Montoni property. In particular, I wanted to flag the 2014 Perricone Vigna del Core. This native Sicilian grape is late to ripen and often proves difficult in obtaining higher alcohol levels (like the 13.5% alcohol recorded here). In other words, it's a very difficult variety to farm, but Fabio has succeeded in producing an exceptional wine." (WA)

"Purple-ruby. Delicate aromas of dark berries, red plum, ink and violet are not unlike a Dolcetto. Bright and savory on the palate, offering suave flavors of red and dark berries, minerals and violet pastille. This long, bright knockout midweight wine was made with organically grown grapes planted 20, 25 and 75 years ago." (VM)

Winery Notes:
Core is the name of the cru from which the grapes hail. The name has its origins in a vineyard that has always been called, “core,” by the farmers of Montoni. In Sicilian, “core” means heart. In fact, seen from above, the vineyard is the shape of a heart.
