"The powerful, ripe and heady 2013 La Basseta is 80% Garnacha and the rest Cariñena. The Garnacha is from a 15-year-old vineyard on decomposed slate and sand soil at 600 meters altitude, while the Cariñena was planted some 12 years ago from a massale selection of old Priorat vines on deep clay soils with slate at 300 meters altitude. The nose is very fragrant, floral and intoxicating. The two grapes fermented separately, as they are harvested with almost two weeks difference, with 35% of the Garnacha in full clusters. As with other wines, the Garnacha is in used barriques and the Cariñena in new, and the élevage lasts some 16 months. The oak is perfectly integrated into the wine, which showed a great combination of elegance and power, with very good balance and freshness. The tannins are very fine and the aftertaste clean. Twenty-seven hectoliters resulted in 3,527 bottles and 100 magnums.

The reds from Mas Alta showed good purity and freshness in a vintage like 2013, and a lot less oak than in the past." (WA)

Winery Notes:
La Basseta has at its core young vine Garnatxa planted at 600 meters in elevation in the village of La Vilella Alta supplemented some older vines of Garnatxa and about 25% Syrah. Due to the elevation of the Garnatxa, the inclusion of 35% stem in the fermentation and aging it in neutral (and increasingly larger) French oak barrels, La Basseta, while showcasing the richness and polish typical of Mas Alta, is the most delicate and floral of the wines from this estate.
