BRAND NEW FROM THE MASTERS!!

"2012 was an unusual vintage in Rioja, as it was warm and dry, but the wines are fresher than those from 2011. Th 2012 Viña Arana shows that character, as it's ripe and has concentration but is quite balanced. There are some creamy notes and plenty of underbrush, wet forest floor, spice and smoke, very recognizable as Rioja. It's clean, aromatic and open. Very pleasant and approachable, with enough grip to stand up to most foods. This is already a Gran Reserva. 80,000 bottles produced from 267 barriques, where the wine matured for three years.

La Rioja Alta, one of the classical wineries in the Barrio de la Estación in Haro, has started converting ten hectares of their vineyard to organic farming, which is a welcomed move. But it's only a small step that I hope they continue and accelerate, as they own some 420 hectares of vineyards that are the only source for their approximately 1.4 million bottles. The wines are classical Rioja, with plenty of spicy oak, very recognizable. They are currently releasing wines from some very good vintages, like 2010 and 2005." (WA)
