"As clean and fresh as it is irrepressibly fruity and a wine that is as accessible as accessible gets, Carmel Road's outgoing Pinot may not convey a great sense of reserve, but it is downright delectable right now. Its easy gait and carefully scrubbed style in no way detract from its ample, well-defined varietal fruit, and if not at all fragile, it will not get a lot better, and it wants to be enjoyed while still in the full flush of youth. Winery Notes:
Rising from the wide mouth of the deep, cold Monterey Bay, the Arroyo Seco AVA is located 40 miles up the Salinas Valley, nestled to the west on the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Directly in the path of the ocean’s relentless influence, fog and fierce winds sweep over the vineyards, making this one of the coldest wine regions in California. The maritime climate combines with rocky, well-drained, alluvial gravel soils to produce Pinot Noir with bright, vibrant fruit flavors.

VINTAGE 2011:
Like the previous vintage of 2010, the 2011 growing season started off late. We encountered some of the coolest temperatures we’ve seen in the past 10 years. This, along with higher-than-normal spring rainfall, lowered overall yields. The cool weather persisted throughout the summer months, allowing the fruit to ripen slowly on the vine well into a later-than-average harvest. The resulting wines offer balanced acidity as well as complexity of texture and varietal character.

WINEMAKING:
This Pinot Noir was sourced primarily from our Panorama estate vineyard (75%), balanced with select lots from the Clark vineyard (10%) and Mission Peak vineyard (5%). These vineyards have been certified sustainable by the SIP organization (Sustainability In Practice) since 2008. After fermentation was complete, the wine was aged 9 months primarily in 96% French oak (16% new) for 9 months.
