"2011 was a very healthy and warm vintage, but even so, the 2011 Reserva, a varietal Tempranillo, has moderate alcohol and healthy acidity. It was sourced from 2.5 hectares of old vines in Lapuebla de Labarca, fermented in stainless steel and aged in French barriques for 22 months. It feels more balsamic with more depth, quite oaky and spicy in a hedonistic, heady way. The fruit is ripe and voluptuous, and the palate shows resolved tannins and clean flavors. This is perfect for current drinking, a clean, updated classic Rioja that should also evolve nicely in bottle. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2014.

Familia Alonso López is the project of husband and wife Ignacio Alonso and Eva López, who produce wines in different regions of Spain and Portugal that are hosted in different wineries. Most of the time, the wines are sold as one more brand of the hosting winery, but in the case of Rioja, they use their family name as the brand, so it feels a lot more personal and should be separated from Casado Morales, where they produce their range. The winery and vineyards are in Lapuebla de Labarca (Alava), and they produce some 40,000 bottles per vintage." (WA)

"(malo and 22 months of aging in new French oak barrels) Deep red. Deeply perfumed aromas of cherry and cassis, smoky oak, incense and pungent flowers, lifted by a mineral element. Sappy, nicely concentrated cherry and boysenberry flavors show very good clarity and spicy cut. Delivers a suave blend of depth and energy and finishes spicy and long, with fine-grained tannins making a late appearance." (VM)
