Vineyard Notes:
With gnarled, old vineyards dating back to 1961, Sebastiani was one of the original pioneers of Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County. Since its inception in the 1980s, our Sonoma County bottling has set a benchmark for quality and character, earning high scores and praise from the press, trade and consumers. The wine owes much of its success to superior vineyards farmed by dedicated growers located in two of the region's top AVAs for Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon: Sonoma Valley and Alexander Valley.

Production Notes:
The 2009 season opened with a west and cool winter and early spring. Although set was delayed into mid-June, mild weather led to an even set with full clusters of berries. Summer was also cooler than normal with very few hot days, resulting in greater cluster weights. We had to thin some of the blocks in late August to guarantee proper fruit maturity. We began harvesting all of the Merlot and a few early-maturing Cabernet vineyards at the beginning of October. I decided to delay harvesting the remainder of the crop despite the threat of rain in mid-October. Fortunately, we had enough good weather after the raings to achieve full fruit maturity in late October. After a three-day cold soak, we crushed and fermented the grapes for 8 to 10 days at relatively warm temperatures in stainless steel tanks. Tannin concentration was high so we pressed earlier than in the past. After pressing, each lot was blended or egg-white fined depending on flavor, color and tannin concentration. most lots were racked into one- and two-year-old American and neutral French and Hungarian oak barrels. The following April some lots were re-racked into new American oak. In total, this cabernet spent 17 months in wood. Small percentages of Merlot, Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot were included for balance, aromatics and flavor.

Winemaker Notes:
Our 2009 displays black tea and black cherry Cabernet aromas complemented with coconut and mocha from the oak. Showing all the finesse and complexity of a cooler vintage, the flavors emphasize black cherries, truffles, earth and dust. The finish possesses enough tannin to support the abundant levels of fruit. While this wine will improve and evolve over the next few years, it drinks superbly now. -Mark R. Lyon, Winemaker
