"There is a lot of debate around what’s the “best” style of California Chardonnay. Oak vs. Steel, malolactic fermentation or not, buttery vs. crisp. Unfortunately, this debate has caused producers and consumers to focus more on style and less on the quality of what’s in the glass. So many California wine tastings start with a pour of Chardonnay followed by a statement like “Now don’t expect some sort of buttery/overoaked Chardonnay. We take a different approach”. Here’s a different approach: focus on making good wine out of good grapes, and let the wine speak for itself.

Gary Farrell did just that with his 2009 Russian River Valley Chardonnay. This wine has some oak influence, but it doesn’t taste like a campfire. It’s crisp, balanced, has an exceptional mouthfeel and a very long finish. In other words, it’s a great Chardonnay, regardless of the barrel program, fermentation techniques, yields or any other show-offy winemaking jargon.

Winery Notes:
The 2009 release of Russian River Chardonnay displays a lemon-gold hue with a lovely, bright clarity. The developing nose offers up aromas of ripe green apple, pear, candied lemon and lime, highlighted by rich tones of roasted grain and light vanilla and butterscotch. The palate offers beautifully balanced acidity, body, flavor and length. With a lively acidity and supple viscosity, this wine will pair exceptionally well with seafood and poultry dishes, as well as a fine aged Gouda.

Winemaker Notes:
The creation of cuvées is among our most important and exciting tasks, resulting in the finest possible blends utilizing all our best sources. This vintage is sourced from some the top vineyard properties in the Russian River Valley, creating a fine example of the character and expressiveness of Chardonnay grown here. VINTAGE 2009 was a long and cool vintage. A cool, wet Spring extended bloom time and reduced crop size in some areas. Early May rains contributed to excellent flavor, color development and lower sugar content. Summer temperatures were below normal, with limited heat spikes. Later in the growing season cool foggy mornings were followed by warm sunny afternoons, giving us absolutely ideal grape ripening conditions. The classic Russian River Valley weather pattern allowed grapes to develop full flavor maturity over an extended growing season while retaining their bright, natural acidity. Harvest kicked off a week to ten days later than normal. Chardonnay and Pinot have shown excessively small berries resulting in wonderful, concentrated flavors.
