"Among the two Chardonnays, I have a preference for the straight 2009 Chardonnay, which is absolutely gorgeous. Rich layers of fruit caress the palate from start to finish. Aging in 400-liter oak barrels seems to integrate better with this fruit than steel, resulting in a more harmonious wine. The expansive, generous finish is framed by an unobtrusive hint of oak. This is a fabulous showing from Dierberg. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.

This set of new releases from Dierberg was one of the most pleasant surprises in my Central Coast tastings." (WA)

"This is a beauty of a Chardonnay from Santa Maria Valley, elegant and minerally, with some sass to it and a bright acidity that sends you back to the glass for another sip. It's brilliant as an apéritif but ready to escort grilled swordfish, steamed shellfish or even a chicken fricassee to the table. I might try it with fried chicken or sweetbreads too. And certainly with sushi.

Region: Central Coast

"Long time readers of this blog know I am a fan of cool climate, Central Coast Chardonnay. Monterey and Santa Barbara counties are hot spots for this style of wine and big time value. Take the wine I drank last night, Dierberg’s Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay, which was awarded 93 points from the Wine Advocate’s Antonio Galloni. Slap a Carneros label on this wine and it would be well over $30. But at $22.95, this is both an awesome wine and an awesome value.

This wine pours a light straw color with a bright nose of tropical fruit accented with a nice smokiness. Aging in larger than normal oak barrels imparts the smokiness, but allows the wine to keep a nice balance and finesse. Furthermore, only 10% of this wine goes through malolactic fermentation, so it retains a nice crisp acid that’s uncommon in barrel aged Chardonnay.

Dierberg is a winery to watch. I visited them a couple of years ago and was impressed with their Rhones and Chardonnay as well as the Bordeaux varietals being made from grapes grown in the new Happy Canyon AVA. At $22.95, this is one of the best Chardonnay values available." (Nickel and Dime)

Winery Notes
Our 2009 Chardonnay opens with vibrant orchard fruit aromatics, particularly Anjou pear and Fuji apple. With air, these are augmented by autumnal scents of baking spice and Marcona almond. Racy on the palate, this is a vintage full of fresh, mineral energy- hints of sea shell and river stones that dovetail into a long, mouthwatering finish. Perhaps our most precise expression of our Santa Maria vineyard yet, we expect this vivacious Chardonnay to age beautifully over the next 6 to 8 years.
