"The 2009 Nero d’Avola emerges from the glass with layers of vibrant, perfumed red fruit. This silky, graceful red offers tons of varietal character and wonderful balance in an up-front, juicy style I find particularly appealing. The Nero d’Avola is aged exclusively in steel, which helps preserve quite a bit of freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013.

It was not that long ago that I was disappointed by the vast majority of wines from Sicily, including the reds made from the local Nero D’Avola grape. Then with mod¬ern wine technology in both the vineyard and the winery, I’ve come across relatively recently -- many a winning Nero D’Avola but they all seemed to be in the $18 to $30+ category. The lower priced ones just being too one-dimensional. That is until I tried this ’09 from Cantina Colosi with my Saturday Wine Lunch Bunch a few weeks ago. I found it quite appealing as did every one else and all felt that at $10.95 it was quite a bargain.

The wine exhibits a bright youthful ruby color with abundant fresh fruit flavors of dark berries, ripe plums, cherries and touches of rosemary and sage like herbs. The acid balance is excellent and there is just enough tannin to give the wine decent backbone. Its charm is in the forward fruit, so enjoy now and during the next 2 to 4 years."
