"Dense yet lively, this expressive red shows morello cherry, floral, licorice and mineral flavors supported by light, firm tannins and fresh acidity. Mountain herb and smoke notes keep this from turning candied, but the sweet fruit lingers nicely. Drink now through 2016. 6,500 cases made. " (WS)

"The 2009 Blau is a blend of 50% Carinena, 25% Syrah, and 25% Garnacha aged 4 months in French oak. This crowd-pleasing effort delivers a big mouthful of fruit along with notes of mineral, lavender, blueberry, and plum. Forward, tasty, and well-balanced, it is an excellent value for drinking over the next 3-4 years.

Cellers Can Blau is a relatively new Montsant estate founded by Bodegas Juan Gil (of Jumilla) in 2003. The lineup includes one new wine named Blau." (WA)

"(50% carinena and 25% each of garnacha and syrah): Deep ruby. High-pitched aromas of raspberry and cherry, with suave floral and spice accents and a hint of cola. Spicy and focused on the palate, with good lift and cut to its tangy red and dark berry flavors. Finishes with notes of bitter chocolate, pepper and cherry pit." (IWC)

Winery Notes:
The D.O. Montsant, where Can Blau is located is horse shoe shaped appellation that surrounds the D.O. Priorat on three sides. It should have been included on the Priorat appellation but was excluded when it was designated. The winery selected the village of Mas Roig as the base of operations and purchased 25 hectares (60 acres) of vineyards with an average age of 35 years. The varietal, CariƱena, was planted on sandy clay soil; Syrah on chalky soils and the Garnacha on slate, llicorella. The soils are similar to Priorat with Montsant being a bit more complex with a mixture of slate (llicorella), sandy clay and chalk.
