"Dense and powerful, with blackberry, sage and olive aromas that lead to deep, slightly rustic flavors of huckleberry and white pepper. Tannins are a bit untamed. Needs time. Best after 2012. 7,200 cases made." (WS)

"The medium to full-bodied 2008 Zinfandel Old Vine has a deep ruby/purple color and a nose of garrigue, lavender and Provencal herbs. With juicy berry fruit flavors as well as notes of briar, underbrush and pepper, it is a classic North Coast Zinfandel to drink over the next 3-4 years.

Among the great Italian heritage families in Northern California (and there are many of those), Seghesio continues to set a high standard for quality and attractive value." (WA)

Winery Notes:
From vineyards located on the Dry Creek bench and the western edge of Alexander Valley, Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel embodies our family‟s goal of Sharing Uncommon Ground, as only the finest lots from these vineyards, planted from 1920 to 1950, are blended together to make this special wine.

True "Old Vine‟ Zin for us means thick trunks, heavy bark, dry-farmed clones dating back to the years of Prohibition. Each of these old blocks have a few vines of Carignane and or Petite inter-planted, as that is how Zinfandel was planted back in those times in our area. Although “Old Vine” is often loosely interpreted in the wine industry, our benchmark is fifty years.

Mother Nature challenged us in 2008 with a second year of drought, a freeze at bloom and high winds during fruit set that literally blew some of the crop off the vines. Prior to harvest, ten consecutive days over 100˚, followed by a dry lightning storm, set much of California ablaze and had grape growers on edge. These conditions pushed maturity levels.
