"Good bright, full ruby. Sexy, expressive aromas of currant, spicecake and chocolate. More pliant than the 2007 but not hugely concentrated. Firm acidity and some herbal character give this cabernet very good freshness. Seems better balanced and more approachable than the 2007, not to mention longer and more flavorful on the finish." Winery Notes:
State Ranch is located northeast of the town of Yountville. The 23-acre vineyard is divided into two parcels by State Lane Road and consists of both older and younger vines. Many excellent wines are produced from this area, in part due to the rocky, loam soil which has excellent drainage throughout the year. The vines, as well as the clusters, are moderate in size and the vineyard gets full sun throughout the day. As the young vines mature, we will be harvesting many different clones to make the final wine. Nickel & Nickel selects fruit from 11 acres of the vineyard.

The 2008 growing season provided a variety of weather patterns that presented a few challenges, but ultimately resulted in some exciting wines. The year began with substantial rainfall, but was followed by a dry spell that actually put us behind normal precipitation levels. The longest frost season in decades followed, which lowered vineyard yields, but the remaining crop developed beautiful intensity. Very warm temperatures in mid-May gave way to a cool summer and warm September, and grapes from the younger vines, now with a little more age, tasted wonderfully. An October harvest is ideal for this vineyard.

The 2008 State Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon offers vibrant aromas of fruit and a rich mouthful of black cherry and berry. A toasty component from the oak complements the abundant fruit and offers a slight cigar quality. There is a firmer core to this wine, but the vintage’s tannins are so supple and fine that they are quite polished.
