"Bright and lively, with lots of raspberry and cherry fruit on a medium-weight frame. A hint of mocha adds interest, remaining open and expressive through the gentle, focused finish. An elegant package. Shiraz. Drink now through 2016. 200 cases imported." (WS)

"The 2008 Eligo Shiraz reveals a very deep purple-black color and pronounced creme de cassis, licorice, dark chocolate and nut aromas with underlying loam, cedar, dried plum and espresso notes. Full bodied and yet remarkably elegant in the mouth, it has complex layers of savory and warm black fruit flavors balanced by refreshing acid and a medium to firm level of very fine tannins, finishing with great persistence. Still tight-knit and primary, it should drink best 2014 to 2024+." (WA)

"Glass-staining ruby. Intensely floral aromas of fresh red and dark berries, candied cherry and cracked pepper. Silky in texture, with midweight black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors, nervy mineral cut and slow-building tannins. This balanced, elegant wine has the energy to reward patience." (IWC)

"Duval used to make Grange, so it is no surprise that his current luxury Shiraz is so successful. The 2008 Eligo oozes with oaky sweetness—vanilla, maple syrup and brown sugar notes—but balances that with potent cassis fruit and somehow ends on dry, savory notes of tobacco and spice. Drink now-2018, although it could surprise and go longer. — J.C. (5/1/2012) " (WE)

"Barossa shiraz of excellence – marrying regional depth and sumptuous power with true elegance and attitude. A deep, concentrated bouquet of dark plums, blackberries, cassis and sweet gamey, meaty oak with undertones of dark chocolate and soy precedes a long, smooth and velvety palate. Underpinned by very fine, crunchy tannins, its dense berry/plum fruit knit tightly with savoury oak, finishes with exemplary length, breadth and balance." (JO)

Winery Notes:
The 2008 vintage started with favorable flowering conditions. After a few hot days in December, January and February were relatively mild with excellent conditions for ripening and the Shiraz harvest was wrapped up by the end of February.

Eligo epitomizes John’s unparalleled knowledge of Barossa’s terrior and fruit. Traditional, low-intervention winemaking techniques ensure that this flagship wine is full of finesse and character. Submerged-cap fermentation takes place in small, stainless steel fermenters with a small portion undergoing extended maceration for up to two weeks to maximize color and flavor extraction.

The 2008 Eligo Shiraz is perfumed with concentrated blackberry, blueberry and fragrant oak characters. Its rich palate has layers of dark fruits and smokey oak without being overly extracted or jammy. Eligo’s texture is rich and creamy with ample tannin structure for balance. The elegant, refined finish further defines John’s style. Eligo will age well for at least fifteen years under proper cellaring conditions.
