LONG TIME FAVORITE BANDOL & THIS ’08 IS MAYBE THE BEST YET 2008 BANDOL, Est. Btld. DOMAINE TEMPIER

Bandol, the hearty yet elegant red is the best wine of Provence, coming from vineyards just south of the Rhone and made mostly from Rhones Mourvedre grape and similar to a fine Chateauneuf-du-Pape without the Grenache characteristics.

I’ve been a fan of Domaine Tempier’s Bandols for decades and this 2008 may be (along with their 2004) the finest wine they have yet produced. The color is a deep purple with a nose of ripe blackberries, a hint of wet leather and an appealing almost floral herbaceousness. On the taste-buds, the boysenberry character, along with that of ripe currants and dark cherries, continues combined with noticeable hints of wild mushrooms plus minerality in the finish of this long on the palate wine. The wine also has a firm tannic backbone and other characteristics that make cellaring a real asset to reveal the wines full character. Anticipated maturity for this Bandol is 2014 through 2020, even though I must admit that I certainly enjoyed this young fellow with a Prime Grande New York cut steak from Costco (home of the best value in Prime Grade meats in this area).

Domaine Tempier is one of the oldest vineyards in Bandol and covers roughly 95 acres in several plots. In the case of this 2008 the wine is about 80% Mourvedre with the balance being Cinsualt and Carignan.

Winery Notes:
A deep ruby color. Aromas of dark fruit. Intense smooth tannins. After 5 or 6 years of aging, the wine will develop notes of leather, forest-floor and small red fruit.
