"($180) Pale light yellow. Deep, musky aromas of mint, spices, wild herbs and licorice, with fruit very much in the background. Big, rich and deep, but with strong acidity suppressing the wine's mid-palate flavors. A dense, young and powerful style, in need of extended aging to take its shape and express itself. Finishes chewy and long, with strong building minerality. Ramonet's top 2008s are much more about soil and minerality than they are about fruit, and a number of them will require extended cellaring; most of them make no concessions to early drinkability." "A restrained but stylish nose of pain grillé, citrus blossom and apple combines with understated, pure and refined medium full-bodied flavors that culminate in a stunningly intense finish that displays a good deal more minerality than is typical for Bâtard. This is still very primary yet oozes class and refinement but even so it will clearly require a few years in bottle before it's really ready for prime time. In particular, I really like the overall sense of balance and harmony and this should eventually be quite special." (BH)
