Blend: 44% grenache, 30% syrah, 25% mourvedre, 1% viognier

"The estate’s 2008 Cuvee Constantine is 67% Grenache, 27% Mourvedre and 6% Syrah. It is a beautiful, layered wine redolent of dried red fruit, flowers, mint and sweet herbs, all of which come together on a classy, mid-weight frame. The finish is long, understated and impeccable. Fifty-percent whole clusters on the Grenache add lift and aromatic complexity on the close. The Cuvee Constance spent 27 months in mid-sized barrels, 20% new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.

This range from Demetria was among the most thrilling I tasted for many reasons, not the least of which is the superb value many of these wines offer. The winery is owned by John and Sandra Zahoudanis, who pay respect to their Greek heritage in the names of these wines. Philippe Armenier, best known for his work at Domaine Marcoux, consults on the vineyards, which are farmed biodynamically. The wines are fermented with ambient yeasts, aged in neutral oak (mostly puncheons) and bottled unfined and unfiltered. A spring frost in 2008 and heat spikes later in the year conspired to reduce yields to a dramatic 0.80 tons per acre. The wines, though, are stunning. Demetria has to be considered one of the most exciting ‘new’ wineries in California’s Central Coast. Unfortunately I was not able to taste the estate’s Pinots and Chardonnays, but I will address that oversight next year." (WA)

Winery Notes:
As we blend Constantine each year we are searching for that magical combination where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. After 22 months in puncheons and 9 months in bottle, the wine is drinking beautifully. The wine is loaded with ripe red fruits including cherries, raspberries, and dried strawberries. Look for exotic aromas and flavors of licorice, lavender, menthol and sandalwood, which will build as the wine opens in the glass. Drink now or hold for up to a decade.
