"Plush yet restrained, this alluring red delivers rich, ripe flavors of cassis and huckleberry, framed by chocolate and smoke, supported by firm, smooth tannins and lively acidity. Very polished, in the modern style. Drink now through 2013. 350 cases imported." (WS)

"(100% garnacha):Inky violet. A hypnotic bouquet evokes black and blue fruits, incense, smoky oak spices and potpourri. Deeply pitched but energetic, offering sappy blackberry and boysenberry flavors that stain the palate. Becomes spicier with and picks up notes of candied lavender and vanilla. The bright finish echoes with floral and spice notes, finishing with excellent cut." (IWC)

"A huge load with sophistication and style to go with tons of raw power. Tobacco, balsam wood and pure blackberry aromas are stylish and enticing. Shows body and structure on the palate along with black fruit, mocha, chocolate and toast flavors. Long and heavenly on the finish. Drink now through 2015." (WE)

100% Garnacha Estate bottled.

Joint venture of Jose Miguel San Martin, Jorge Ordonez, Bodegas Borsao and Dan Phillips in conjunction with Chris Ringland. Winery is located in the town of Bulbuente. Grapes are sourced from 62 hectares (153.2 acres) of old clone Garnacha vines planted on hillside vineyards oriented to the southwest. A few of the vineyards are terraced. All the vines are vaso trained. The vineyards are located in 3 villages. Very unique soils of red clay (indicative of being rich in iron) mixed with red slate. Because of its hillside location the soils are very poor in organic matter and shallow. A few sites have calcareous soils. Continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Nighttime during the summer brings cool temperatures to moderate the growing season. There is scant rainfall.

This wine is spectacular, and represents the perfect foil for grilled steak. Rich, full bodied and muscular, Alto Moncayo has riveting intensity and palate staining extract; this Spanish red is inky/purple, full-bodied, and rich. This pedal-to-the-metal offering should age handsomely for a decade.
