"The 2007 Remelluri is composed of 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano, and 5% Garnacha fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 16 months in seasoned French and American oak. Deep purple in color, it reveals an already complex bouquet of exotic spices, leather, violets, mineral, and assorted black fruits. In the glass it is succulent with plush fruit, terrific grip and volume, and a lengthy, rich, supple finish. It can be approached now but is likely to continue filling out for several more years.

The modern winery of Remelluri was established in 1967. The vineyards are farmed organically and the winery employs an integrated system of agriculture. The winemaker is the renowned Telmo Rodriguez. Remelluri’s Blanco is the reference standard against which all others are measured in virtually every vintage." (WA)

"RICH, IMPRESSIVE $33.95 RIOJA, EASILY ONE OF THE BEST SPANISH WINES A MUST TRY WINE! 2007 REMELLURI RIOJA, Est. Btld. Granga de Rennelluri

As I’ve been saying for years whereas Pinot Noir is the easiest of all red varietals to pick out at a blind tasting, wines made from the Tempranillo are among the most difficult as they very so much even from winery to winery event s in the same area. Such is the case of this excellent ’07 estate bottled by Remelluri. For instead of the usual light-bodied wines one so often finds in Rioja wines, the Remelluri is a heart-medium to full bodied fellow, as evident from the start with its deep rich ruby color and richness in flavor which concludes with a long complex finish. If served blind to me, I have a feeling that I might have guessed the wine as a most elegant Cabernet-Merlot blend from Bordeaux and maybe even Napa, In the under $50 and maybe even $75 range, I cannot think of a better Spanish wine then this ’07 with its bargain price of $33.95 (regular is around $40 plus).

I can do no better in describing this superb wine by quoting Robert Parker’s reviewer when he gave this ’07 a most prestigious 94 and wrote, “The 2007 Remelluri is composed of 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano, and 5% Garnacha fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 16 months in seasoned French and American oak. Deep purple in color, it reveals an already complex bouquet of exotic spices, leather, violets, mineral, and assorted black fruits. In the glass, it is succulent with plush fruit, terrific grip and volume, and a lengthy, rich, supple finish. It can be approached now but is likely to continue filling out for several more years.”

He then goes on to say of the producer, that, “The modern winery of Remelluri was established in 1967. The vineyards farmed organically and the winery employs an integrated system of agriculture. The winemaker is the renowned Telmo Rodriguez.”

Winery Notes:
Wine Maker Notes
All of the grapes were hand selected in the vineyard and transported in 20kg boxes. After further review of the grapes in the winery, the wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks and 5000L wooden vats. It was then aged for 16 months in a combination of 6-year-old French and American (15-20%) oak and bottled in spring 2009.

Tasting Notes
Great black fruit aromas with complex spiciness. The palate is beautiful with a rich brooding texture.

The Remelluri estate’s origins date back to the 14th century when monks from the Toloño monastery founded a sanc- tuary and farm at the site. The monks later abandoned the site but local hermits continued to maintain the shrine while the Real Divisa, a local community organization, maintained the farms to accommodate the needs of pil- grims who came to pray at the sanctuary. The estate eventually was spilt up and sold. The modern winery was es- tablished in 1967 when Jaime Rodríguez Salis purchased the vineyards at the heart of the former estate. Since then Remelluri has been devoted to recovering the old lands of this historic site and restoring the original vineyards.

Remelluri’s vineyards are located along the slopes of the Sierra de Toloño mountains in the valleys of Valderemelluri, La Granja and Villaescusa. The vineyards here are at the highest elevation in the region, south-facing and protected from the prevailing winds and frost. It is the unique microclimate of this area that give the wines of Remelluri their personality.

All of the grapes for the Remelluri 2007 were hand selected in the vineyard and transported in 20kg boxes. After fur- ther review of the grape in the winery, the wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks and 5000L wooden vats. It was then aged for 16 months in a combination of 6-year-old French (70%) and American (30%) oak and bottled in spring 2009.
