"Supple, graceful and refined for a big wine, with floral and exotic spice notes adding depth to the blackberry and dark plum fruit, lingering well against superfine tannins. Best from 2009 through 2017. 300 cases made." (WS)

"The 2005 Shiraz 1880 was sourced from the original Eden Valley vines planted in 1880. The wine was aged in two-thirds new French oak for 18 months. Opaque purple/black in color, this is a big, brooding effort with a superb aromatic array of pain grille, pencil lead, scorched earth, and blueberry compote. Opulent and velvety-textured, this rich, full-flavored Shiraz is surprisingly forward. It can be enjoyed now but will live off of its fruit until at least 2020. It is for hedonists only." (WA)

"($99; from vines planted in, yes, 1880) Inky, glass-staining ruby. Deep blackberry, blueberry and cherry liqueur aromas are complicated by licorice, mocha and sandalwood. Broad, deeply concentrated dark fruit flavors completely saturate the palate, with no rough edges or apparent tannins getting in the way. Lush, creamy and strikingly fresh for all its flavor, finishing with outstanding lift and persistence. Pretty remarkable stuff." (IWC)

Winery Notes:
Poonawatta Estate The 1880 Shiraz is produced from a single vineyard of only two acres planted in 1880. The contorted and gnarled vines are a living relic of Australia’s pioneering wine making heritage.

The vineyard and its harvest are carefully managed to produce outstanding wines commensurate with the heritage of one of Australia’s oldest vineyards.

Poonawatta Estate The 1880 Shiraz is an elegant, full bodied wine, exhibiting luscious fruit characters, lovely soft tannins, is incredibly smooth and has an intensity and finish one would expect from a vineyard with a century plus heritage.

As a single vineyard, seasonal variances such as frost, cool or hot summers, drought and wet years all play a roll in the wine style, ensuring that every year is as unique as it is special.

Now more than 125 years old, this small vineyard of weathered wines produces premium fruit with an exceptional heritage, resulting in some of the most exclusive wines available.
