Though 17 years old this wine astonished me when on opening it the second day after recorking it the day before; it was not only perfectly sound but it was even noticeably improved. Indicating to me that this wine, with its relatively more tannic character then the Pinot Noir usually shows is still youthful and will even improve with age. I’ve maintained for many years that the easiest red wine varietal to pick out blind is the Pinot Noir. When I first tried this wine I wasn’t sure what variety it was. But by day two it was to me obviously Pinot Noir and almost for sure not French and most likely a good California example of this variety, with its somewhat fruity strawberry & plum character and touches of minerality in the background. At Bev Mo and other stores this Gryphon Reserve sells for $49.99, so you can easily understand what a great value it is when being offered at $29.95.

Winery Notes:
In 2000, Jonathon O’Bergin established Gryphon Wines. He has been growing grapes in Anderson Valley since 1978 and currently owns 8 acres of Pinot Noir. Environmentally friendly farming techniques are used in the vineyard.

Meticulous attention to detail is paid throughout the production process and each wine is carefully handcrafted using artisan techniques. These include using natural yeasts for fermentation, French barrel aging, and eschewing fining or filtering.

In addition to Pinot Noir, the winery also makes a small amount of Chardonnay.
