SMALL GROWER PRODUCER, OFF THE CHART QUALITY AT THE PRICE, FLAT OUT BEATS THEM ALL!!
A REMARKABLE ESTATE BOTTLED CHAMPAGNE, A SUPER BARGAIN AT $24.95. (Don’t miss trying it!!!) ALAIN BAILLY BRUT RESERVE, Estate Btld. CHAMPAGNE
I first served this Champagne with some very good friends at one of my favorite restaurants in West L.A., located on Pico Blvd. Right from the start this sparkling delight was a real hit, generating numerous compliments. My friends usually drink Crystal, Dom Perignon, and lots of Tattinger Comte de Champagne, and they too remarked on the quality of this Alain Bailly Brut and were flabbergasted by its bargain $29.95 price (which is about a fourth or fifth of what Comte de Champagne normally sells for). Was it as elegant as the much, much more expensive Grande Marques? No. But it was mighty close in the overall pleasure it generated.
Alain Bailly is entirely estate bottled, meaning that all its grapes come from its own vineyards, and you can verify this by the fact that on the golden bottom line of the label is printed the words “RM”, which means Recolte Manipuler, i.e. the vineyards the grapes all come from belongs to the officially recorded proprietor/owner.
This Brut reserve is a blend of 60% Pinot Meunier and 20% each of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Pinot Meunier gives the champagne its charming, beguiling character, the Pinot Noir its body and vinous power and the Chardonnay its touches of elegance and freshness.
The wine is aged for a minimum of four years which add to its depth of flavor and mouth filling quality. These four years of aging also add to the wine's noticeable golden color and its seductive and most appealing richness and bouquet, without losing even an iota of wonderful freshness.
RATING: 95 (Compared to other Champagnes at $25 it deserves a 98).
PRICE: $24.95, ***** bargain
WHERE: Los Angeles Wine Co.
(Martin's Guide to Wine Bargains)
60% Pinot Meunier, 20% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. The Pinot meunier brings the fruity notes, Pinot noir contributes strength and distinctive taste, and Chardonnay gives it a touch of elegance and freshness. A minimum of four years ageing providing a delightful maturity and complexity to our Grande Réserve blend.
Sustained golden hue, foamy head, very comprehensive nose where a strong bouquet of dried fruit combines with a structured and supple mouth with full bodied, fresh aromas.
Alain Bailly is a small producer from the Montaigne de Reims district in the Champagne appellation of France. The wines are produced in the traditional method, or methode champenoise, and feature exceptional intensity and balance. With pleasant notes of toasty vanilla and fresh baguette, along with subtle tropical fruit and a touch of apricot on the palate, we think you'll find the Brut Grand Reserve to be an exceptional value.
