"The 2014 Pinot Noir includes 20% whole cluster fruit and sees 10% new French oak. I find that the whole cluster here is better integrated when compared directly with the same proportion used for the Planet Oregon, and it has more purity - black cherry, strawberry and just a touch of vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, plenty of spice on the entry with tart red cherries and strawberry notes, crisp towards the finish with moderate length. Drink over the next 4-7 years.
Proprietor Bryan Sypher, who unfortunately could not join the tasting when I was in Oregon, was keen to emphasize that North Valley Vineyards is a separate brand from Soter and Planet Oregon. It now has its own vineyard within the Chehalem Mountain AVA that is augmented by fruit sourced from highly esteemed vineyards from within the Northern Willamette Valley’s six defined sub-AVAs. The Willamette Valley is Oregon's most recognized appellation for cool climate varietal wines, and it is in the Northern part of this region where the finest vineyards are found, an epicenter of quality we refer to as the “North Valley”. While Pinot Noir is the principal focus for what we craft, we also make small amounts of racy Chardonnay, and a dry Rose.
