"(from east-facing vines between 45 and 80 years of age within the stone walls of the clos; the diverse soils here range from mostly clay to mostly limestone, and the wine's components, from three different "layers" of vines, are vinified separately and blended later, which Vincent says yields a wine with more finesse; these vines are located barely 20 meters across a small valley from Les Brûlés): Bright yellow. Very sexy, pure nose combines ripe yellow peach, smoky oak and a subtle suggestion of redcurrant. Wonderfully fine-grained but not a fat or particularly fleshy style. Orange zest and licorice flavors are rather imploded in the early going owing to the wine's strong minerality. "While hardly discreet the wood treatment is somewhat less obvious on the ripe aromas of essence of pear, petrol, citrus and white peach. Buttery nuances mark the middle weight flavors that do offer good vibrancy and an attractive touch of minerality on the delicious, complex and agreeably dry finale. This is really quite good while offering an impressive combination of power and refinement." (BH)
"The seven-acre walled vineyard surrounds the winery and château. Old vines and a sheltered situation give this wine its richness. Enhanced by the wood aging, this wine is ripe with apricots and spiced pears cut with a mineral texture. It is still young and will be much better from 2019." (WE)
With the 1992 vintage Chateau Fuissé produced their single vineyard bottling from their Le Clos vineyard. This cuvée has become one of Pouilly-Fuissé's top selection with age-ability of the famous wines of the Cote de Beaune.
Terroir: This walled parcel directly behind the chateau contains soil of dense clay and has a perfect south/ southeast exposure. The vineyard is planted entirely to Chardonnay vines that average over 45 years of age.
Vinification: Chateau Fuissé Le Clos is barrel fermented and aged in the cool cellars below the chateau for 12 months. 80% of the barrels are new. The wine is is then moved to the state-of-the-art winemaking facility for clarification and bottling. Quantities are limited to under 500 cases a year.
Le Clos is extraordinarily rich with layer upon layer of ripe apple, pair, and spice. The finish is driven by mineral with a firm gripping acidity.
